Tumescent Liposuction Vs. Smart Lipo

Q: Which is better between Tumescent Liposuction and Smart Lipo? Or does it depend on area where the fat is being removed from? Is one better for one area of the body while the other better at a different area?

A: Most board-certified plastic surgeons use tumescent fluid during liposuction.  The tumescent fluid is IV fluid (saline or lactated Ringer’s) mixed with epinephrine (to control bleeding) and lidocaine (for pain control).  It also makes it easier to remove the fat.  The tumescent fluid is injected into the areas to be treated and allowed to rest for a while, then the desired areas are liposuctioned.  There is great debate among the plastic surgery industry as to whether assisted technologies (ultrasound and laser) are beneficial.
