Tummy Tuck Procedure Overview

Anesthesia, recovery time and other things involved in a tummy tuck:

  • Your tummy tuck will be performed under general anesthesia.
  • Most patients go home the same day.
  • It is not safe to operate on you if you are a smoker. I insist that my tummy tuck patients stop smoking at least one month prior to and for one month after surgery. Smoking greatly increases the risk of anesthesia and impedes healing after a tummy tuck.

After your tummy tuck surgery:

  • You should expect mild to moderate pain during the first week after your tummy tuck. This is easily controlled with prescription pain medication.
  • You will need to sleep in a sitting position for the first week after your tummy tuck. This is to prevent stretching of your newly tightened abdomen during sleep.
  • You can resume normal daily activities 2 weeks after your tummy tuck.
  • You can start exercising 4-6 weeks after your tummy tuck.
