Male Breast Reduction-Gynecomastia
Atlanta, Georgia ( Johns Creek)
Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement) is common in men. Gynecomastia is an enlarged male breast caused by excessive glandular tissue. It can cause embarrassment, teasing, and social trauma especially in young men. For men who feel self-conscious about their appearance, breast-reduction surgery can help. Majority of men will try to hide it with baggy shirts and not participating in activities that would cause public exposure of their chest. The procedure removes fat and or glandular tissue from the breasts, and in extreme cases removes excess skin, resulting in a chest that is flatter, firmer, and better contoured.
Different drugs, along with anabolic steroids, may cause gynecomastia. Therefore, patients are first directed to stop the use of these drugs to see if the breast fullness will diminish before surgery is considered. Obese men are discouraged from having the surgery until they first attempt weight reduction.
Dr. Jimerson may, in extreme cases may recommend a mammogram. This will not only rule out the very small possibility of breast cancer, but will reveal the breast's composition. Once Dr. Jimerson knows how much fat and glandular tissue is contained within the breasts, he can choose a surgical approach to best suit your needs.
If the breast tissue is more fatty in nature, liposuction can provide excellent results. During liposuction, a small suction rod (cannula) is inserted into the incision to remove fat and other tissue. For those men with tissue that is more glandular in nature, all breast tissue directly under the nipple is removed.
Dr. Jimerson will work with you on obtaining the result that will enhance your self-image and confidence.
