Are you considering a breast augmentation / breast implants?
When you look in the mirror do you notice certain aspects about your body that you would like to change? Many of my patients are generally happy with the way they look, but there is often one specific area they'd like to alter - their breasts. Some don't like the fact that their breasts are too small or are out of proportion with the rest of their body. Others might have breasts that sag or look 'deflated'.
If you fall into one of these categories, and you're ready to make a significant change in your appearance by having fuller, sexier breasts, then I would recommend that you visit our practice, Advanced Plastic Surgery Solutions, in our new facility in John's Creek, Georgia to discuss breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammaplasty. This could be the first step toward realizing your desired goal.

What are the benefits of breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation uses implants to create larger, fuller breasts. Breast augmentation is one of the most common cosmetic surgeries performed in the US. Many women find that enhancing their figure with breast augmentation increases their self-confidence. In addition to cosmetic reasons, breast augmentation is also performed for breast reconstruction. During this procedure an implant is used to recreate one breast that is severely underdeveloped or to recreate one or both breasts after surgical removal for treatment of breast cancer.
What should I expect during my breast augmentation consultation?
We will meet in person to discuss your goals for your figure. I will examine your breasts thoroughly checking for any lumps. We will need to discuss your medical history and any medications, herbs or supplements that you might be taking. We have several different implant sizes that you can try on to help us determine the correct size for you. Because bra sizes vary with band sizes and vary significantly between manufacturers, I cannot guarantee what cup size you will be after breast augmentation.

Frequently asked questions about breast augmentation surgery:
Is breast augmentation right for me? (Am I a candidate for an augmentation mammaplasty?)
- If you feel your breasts are out of proportion to the rest of your body, you might benefit from a breast augmentation.
- Smoking impedes healing after breast augmentation. If you are a smoker you will need to stop smoking at least one month prior to and for one month after breast augmentation surgery.
What should I expect during the physical exam portion of my consultation?
- I will examine your breasts for lumps. If anything unusual is detected, you will need to see your primary care physician prior to breast augmentation surgery.
- I will give you several different sizes of implants to try on to determine which size implant is right for you.
- I will measure your breasts to determine placement of the implant during your breast augmentation.
- I will photograph your breasts prior to your breast augmentation surgery.
What are the various types of the breast augmentation surgery?
- There are two types of implants commonly used: saline or silicone gel. Saline is not new or experimental in any way and has been used for the past twenty years. Since 1992, silicone has only been approved for breast reconstruction and for use in some clinical studies.
- New implant fillers such as soybean are still experimental, and have not been approved by the FDA. I feel it is very important to keep up to date on FDA regulations for any implants so that I can provide the safest and most effective results for my patients.
- Implants can be placed above or below the chest wall muscle (the pectoralis muscle) during breast augmentation. We will discuss optimum placement for you during your personal consultation.
- The incision for breast augmentation can be placed under the breast (usually hidden in the fold underneath the breast), around the areola (the pigmented portion around the nipple), or in the underarm. We will discuss the optimum incision for you during your consultation.
Will I still be able to breastfeed after breast augmentation surgery?
- Sometimes breast augmentation surgery disturbs the nerves to the nipple. In these cases, breastfeeding may not be possible.
- Many women are able to breastfeed normally after breast augmentation.
Will I still be able to receive mammograms after breast augmentation surgery?
- Yes, It is important to continue to see your primary care doctor as recommended for clinical breast exams, perform monthly self breast exams and to receive recommended mammography screening after breast augmentation.
- Make sure you inform the technician performing your mammogram that you have had breast augmentation.
- You may need to have additional screening with ultrasound or MRI depending on where your implants are placed during breast augmentation.
Breast Augmentation Procedure Overview:
Time involved, anesthesia, recovery time and other things involved in breast augmentation:
- Breast augmentation is performed under general anesthesia.
- Most patients go home the same day
- It is not safe to operate on you if you are a smoker. I insist that my breast augmentation patients stop smoking at least one month prior to and for one month after surgery. Smoking greatly increases the risk of anesthesia and impedes healing after breast implants.
After your breast augmentation surgery:
- You will need to wear a bra around the clock for the first 2 weeks following breast augmentation.
- You should expect mild to moderate pain during the first week after your breast augmentation. This is easily controlled with prescription pain medication.
- You can resume normal daily activities after 1-2 weeks and can start exercising after 4-6 weeks.
Your new look:
- You will have fuller, more shapely breasts immediately following your breast augmentation
- Your implants may take several weeks to settle into their permanent position
- Many women combine breast augmentation with other cosmetic procedures such as breast lift, tummy tuck or liposuction for full body contouring
