What is the best incision For Breast Augmentation?

If you were to poll ten plastic surgeons, you would get ten different answers. Each plastic surgeon has their own philosophy. My best advice is to make your decision after talking to your plastic surgeon decide. This is a big decision and you must consider not only the positives, but also the negatives.

The only advantage to the transaxillary incision is that you don’t have a scar on the breast. There are, however, many negative to this approach: (1) a scar in the axilla can be seen when raising the arms, (2) if the scar becomes hypertrophic it may interfere with shaving, (3) the implants have a tendency to ride high because of the dissection during implant placement, (4) it is hard to place large silicone implants through this approach, (5) surgery time (and hence, your cost) tends to be longer, and (6) subsequent surgeries tend to require a second incision. In other words, when it’s time to have your implants replaced, it is unlikely that your plastic surgeon with use this approach again – especially if you needs a breast lift or capsulectomy. The result is that now may end up with two incisions.

The periareolar incision is a good approach, especially if you need a small lift at the same time. When it heals well it looks great. But there are a few things to consider. This approach puts the incision right on the breast. Therefore, if the incision doesn’t heal well (scar hyperthrophy, widening, darkening) you will see this every time you looks in the mirror. There is also an increased risk of infection. Nevertheless, if you have dark, moderately sized areolas, this could be a good approach.

Usually, I recommend the inframammary (under the breast) approach because it is quick, straightforward and the scar is well hidden when looking at the breast straight on. It is also easy to perform a revision through this approach. When I combine this approach with a dual plane breast augmentation (for ladies with some sagging after children) this gives a very nice predictable result.

How much does a Mommy makeover cost?

It is impossible to give you the exact cost of a Mommy Makeover because it entail so many variables. If your breast lack fullness, then you may only need a breast augmentation; but if they are saggy or your nipples point downward, you may also want a breast lift. Some people only need a c-section scar revision, while others need a full tummy tuck and liposuction in various places. The bottom line is that everyone is different. Before going to see you plastic surgeon, figure out what bothers you and rank them according to importance. Next, find a plastic surgeon who you feel comfortable with. Look at their before and after photos. Remember, Choose your plastic surgeon based on technical skill, bedside manner and patient outcomes. Never pick a surgeon based on price.

Is Breast Augmentation less painful after pregnancy?

Typically, breast augmentation is not more or less painful after pregnancy. The post operative pain associated with breast augmentation is generally cause from putting the implant below the muscle. This pain (usually describe as pressure) generally last for a few days and is well controlled with pain medication.

Julie Stein said she never enjoyed shopping for clothes. The Alpharetta mother of two said she was very self conscious about not being able to fit into dresses and shirts.

“I always kept waiting to hit puberty and it never seemed to happen,” said Stein.

At 5-foot 3-inches tall and 105 pounds, Stein was small-framed. She wore a size AA bra and wanted to feel more feminine.

“This is a part of my body that I’m sensitive about…it’s a womanly thing,” said Stein, 40.

She started researching breast augmentation surgery – the good, the bad and everything in between. She began researching doctors, as well.

A co-worker of Stein’s couldn’t stop talking about a tummy-tuck procedure she underwent with Dr. Andrew Jimerson at Advanced Plastic Surgery Solutions in Suwanee.

“After she recommended Dr. Jimerson, I went for a consultation and learned about his background,” said Stein. “I was really impressed. He really does aim to please the patient.”

Stein went under the knife in December 2007 for breast augmentation surgery, increasing her breast size to a B-cup.

“I didn’t want melons,” she laughed. “I didn’t want to look top-heavy. Dr. Jimerson took my needs into consideration and knew that I wanted a subtle, but noticeable change.”

The outpatient breast augmentation was Stein’s first cosmetic procedure.

“I was a little nervous,” she said. “I researched a lot of information – all about what can happen, the good, the bad and the after effects of surgery. But (Dr. Jimerson) assured me of the chances of something (bad) happening was very, very low.”

Stein opted for silicone breast implants, which cost about $5,000.

“They’re more of a natural feel,” she said. “They’re soft and about as natural as you can get.”

Post-surgery, Stein said she felt pain and engorged. But with proper pain medication and a specialty post-surgical bra, she said her recovery was quick.

“I saw results pretty quickly, too,” said Stein. “Within a couple of weeks I felt much better.”

Two years after surgery, Stein said she couldn’t be happier.

“The best part was shopping for a dress for a black tie affair that I attended about a month after my surgery,” said Stein. “I wasn’t limited to what I could try on and I fit into all kinds of dresses. And, anyone that doesn’t know couldn’t guess that I’ve had surgery.”

Stein said she recommends that women who are interested in having cosmetic procedures should do their research and consult with a physician.

Dual Plane Breast Technique

With dual plane Dr. Jimerson positions the implants partially below the pectoralis major muscle (submuscular) which covers the upper half of the implant, and leaves the bottom half of the implant free to descend under the natural breast (subglandular) at the same time hence the name dual plane.

This technique gives the implant better coverage, especially if you have little to no breast tissue, and gives the breast a more natural look. It also can help lift breast that have a very mild case of breast sagging (ptosis). This method will not help lift breast with significant sagging. This requires a breast lift.

Another advantage of this approach is that it allows for practically no rippling, decreases the likelihood of the breast falling of the implant and a lessens the risk of capsular contraction. With the placement of the implant partially under the muscle it gives the implant more support than a subglandular placement.

The dual plane technique creates very natural and realistic looking breast. By partially placing the implant below the muscle it helps to hold the upper half of the implant up, creating a realistic natural slope and the lower half of the implant is able to slide into the breast pocket creating natural roundness and fullness on the lower half of the breast. This approach creates beautiful natural looking breast instead of obviously enhanced breast.
